Welcome to Hanapepe. Photo by Wally Gobetz on Flickr

Hanapepe is a small town on the south shore of the Hawaiian Island of Kauai. Kauai’s “biggest little town” is also known as the art capitol of the island due to its many galleries and artisans living there.

This area was the inspiration for the fictional town of Kokaua where Lilo and Nani lived in the 2002 animated film, Lilo & Stitch, its sequel, and the animated series.

In the small town of Hanapepe, I found all the usual homey details, ranging from rusted-out bridges to homemade mailboxes

It’s nice to live on an island with no large cities
