The Ponte Vecchio (Italian for “Old Bridge”) is a bridge spanning Florence’s Arno River.
In 1442, the city asked all butchers to move their shops on to the bridge as a means to isolate them from the city and dispose their waste directly into the river below. The bridge became a market and eventually expanded by adding support brackets for additional shops.
The distinct look of the Ponte Vecchio is replicated in Tokyo DisneySea as a souvenir shop called Rimembranze takes up residence on a similar looking bridge in the Mediterranean Harbor section of the park.
