The Royal Sommerhus is a character meet and greet location in Epcot’s Norway Pavilion. Queen Esla and Princess Anna from the 2013 film, Frozen, are onhand in their summer house – a royal retreat cabin. Real Norwegian royalty would use cabins like these as a means to unwind and relax from the pressures of running their kingdom.
The facade of the Sommerhus was heavily influenced by a real Norwegian cabin, the Detli House, which is currently on display in theSverresborg Trøndelag Folkemuseum. The overall design of the building is clearly referenced down to the red and white patterns framing the doorway.
Intricate woodcarvings and rosemåling accents decorate the interior of the building. Much of this styling was patterned after Oslo’s Scandic Holmenkollen Park Hotel, a dragestil hotel built in 1894.
Inside, you’ll also find tributes to Maelstrom, the pavilion’s original ride before Frozen Ever After took over. Look for tapestries along the queue which depict scenes from the former attraction.
