Lucy the Elephant is the oldest surviving roadside tourist attraction in America. Constructed in 1881, it was one of three larger-than-life elephant structures built by James V. Lafferty. This one was created in order to attract guests to the nearby Boardwalk of Atlantic City, New Jersey. Lafferty patented the rights to build and sell animal-shaped buildings for a period of time in the late 1800s. You can find a small model of Lucy and a framed photo of her in the lobby of Disney’s Boardwalk Resort, an homage to the boardwalks of Atlantic City and Coney Island. Today, Lucy is open to visitors and you can even stay there overnight by renting through Airbnb. If you’re new to Airbnb, use our sign-up link for a coupon when registering.
