This memorial to the creator of Winne the Pooh in the heart of the Five Hundred Acre Wood is inscribed with a quote from The House at Pooh Corner: And by and by they came to an enchanted place on the very top of the Forest called Galleons Lap. The plaque continues to proclaim that here at Gills Lap are commemorated A. A. Milne 1882-1956 and E. H. Shepard 1879-1976 who collaborated in the creation of “Winnie-The-Pooh” and so captured the magic of Ashdown Forest and gave it to the world. Battersea Park is a public park in London. You may recognize the distinct walkway running through the center as the area where Kermit, Miss Piggy, and a whole slew of Muppets rode bikes in The Great Muppet Caper (1981). Filmed in September of 1980, this was the first time multiple Muppet character road bicycles simultaneously, achieved through a combination of radio controls, marionette puppeteering, and a rod that joined the bikes together. Scenes for 2016’s Rogue One: A Star Wars Story were filmed in London’s Canary Wharf underground tube station. “My first job ever in television was just round the corner… [I thought:] This is something from the future. This is like a sci-fi movie. If I ever get to do a sci-fi film in my life I’m gonna film it here.” – Rogue One Director Gareth Edwards The station’s dark and metallic tones set the perfect mood as the interior of an Imperial Base. Unfortunately, these scenes never made the final cut of the film but they do appear in the official teaser trailer (at the 1:12 mark). It was here that Milne wrote the Winnie-the-Pooh stories, inspired by the surrounding forest’s Five Hundred Acre Wood. Recently sold, the home’s gardens feature original statues of Christopher Robin and a sundial with carvings of Pooh, the author’s initials, and the following quote: This warm and sunny spot belongs to Pooh, And here he wonders what it’s time to do. The Five Hundred Acre Wood is a section of Ashdown Forest in southern England, 40 miles outside of London. It was here that author A. A. Milne was inspired to write his Winnie-the-Pooh stories, naming the area the Hundred Acre Wood in his books. Within this public park, you can find a number of Pooh-related sites including Gill’s Lap (called Galleon’s Lap in the Poohniverse), Pooh Bridge, and a teashop devoted to our favorite pantless bear. It was on the nearby Cotchford Farm that Milne wrote all of the Winnie-the-Pooh books. A pamphlet and detailed map of these and more Pooh sites can be downloaded from the Ashdown Forest’s website for a small donation. Deep in the Five Hundred Acre Wood lay Pooh Bridge (or Pooh Sticks Bridge, as some call it). This bridge was originally built in 1907 (and rebuilt in 1999) and a favorite playspot of Pooh author A. A. Milne and his son Christopher Robin. As told in The House at Pooh Corner, Pooh and friends would play a game of “Pooh-sticks” from this bridge. The bridge and game are prominently featured in the 1983 animated short, Winnie the Pooh and a Day for Eeyore. Not to be mistaken with the shop in Disneyland, this small boutique and teahouse in Ashdown Forest (the inspiration for A. A. Milne’s Pooh stories) has been welcoming Pooh fans since 1978. It draws its name from the title of one of Milne’s books, The House at Pooh Corner. While the shop is full of Pooh memorabilia, it is not owned by the Milne family or Disney, however, they have been granted special use of the illustration in their logo. Greenham Common’s GLCM (Ground Launched Cruise Missile) Alert and Maintenance Area was used as a filming location for 2015’s Star Wars: The Force Awakens. The grass-covered bunkers stood in as the Resistance’s above-ground base on the fictional planet D’Qar. This historic area was used by both the Royal Air Force and the United States Army Air Forces during World War II and again in the Cold War, as a base for nuclear weapons. The base was closed in 1992 but still exists today. While the bunkers are closed off to the public, you can scope them out from the perimeter or get a view from above by visiting the nearby Greenham Control Tower.
